MENOPAUSE

Menopause is when a woman has her last period. The average age in Australia is 51 years, with a normal range of 40-60 years. Around the menopause many women experience irregular periods and troublesome menopausal symptoms.

Menopause is a natural occurrence but only in the last 200 years has it been experienced by most of the adult female population. Menopause occurs because the ovaries gradually stop producing oestrogen.

CYCLE IRREGULARITY

Cycles often initially become shorter - from 28 to 21 days a few years prior to irregular or missed periods. If there is doubt about the normality of the periods it is best to talk to your doctor, as there may be cause for concern. Some women choose hormonal treatment, eg. O.C. pill to regulate cycles.

MENOPAUSAL SYMPTOMS

Menopausal symptoms, largely attributable to low and fluctuating oestrogen levels, include hot flushes, feeling low for no reason, irritability, crawling feeling under the skin, vaginal dryness, tiredness, insomnia, palpitations, poor memory, poor concentration, muscle and joint aches.

Some women vary enormously in their experience of these symptoms. For some women hormone replacement therapy is a suitable way of controlling menopausal symptoms. Other measures are often worthwhile trying. Hot flushes may be reduced by reducing stress, limiting alcohol, hot drinks and food, and spicy foods. Medications other than oestrogen may help.

Leading a healthy lifestyle may make the menopause less uncomfortable. Reduce obesity, smoking, caffeine, and alcohol and ensure sufficient exercise, relaxation and a balanced diet.

There are forms of oestrogens in some plant food, eg. phytoestrogens in soy products, but their benefit in the menopause is unclear.

It is often worthwhile discussing menopausal symptoms and related issues with your doctor. Some topics which are relevant include:

  • breast examinations and mammography - 2 yearly
  • continuing 2 yearly pap smears
  • sexual functions - vaginal dryness and loss of libido (simple medication is available)
  • contraception required until 12 months after last period
  • risk of osteoporosis
  • weight and blood pressure check
  • risk of heart disease, (smoking)
  • cholesterol check
  • immunisations - tetanus, diphtheria, flu.
