TOTAL CORRECT
SCORE: 8-10 Intact; 5-7 Mild; 3-4 Moderate; 0-2 Severe intellectual dysfunction

The questionnaire has defects. Mild or early dementia may score normal. The MIS contains key questions of orientation, memory and recall and acts as a good discriminator of mild, moderate and severe mental impairment. It has been validated with the Roth Hopkins Test that is said to correlate well with pathological brain changes in senile dementia. It rapidly penetrates a good social facade and ready flow of conversation characteristic of some patients suffering from dementia thereby revealing the true state of affairs - often to the surprise of attendants.

Some with formal brain disorders, especially dysphasia, isolated amnesia or frontal lobe defect may be classified as suffering from dementia. It does not provide information on areas of impairment. It is incapable where there is dysphasia, deafness, depression, disturbed consciousness, native language difficulties and severe illness when the person cannot cooperate.

Other mental state tests are available and may be equally suitable for assessment. The clinician should use the test with they are most comfortable and familiar.
