The Youth Substance Abuse Service (YSAS)
The Youth Substance Abuse Service (YSAS) is currently being established to provide
treatment and care to young people aged between 12 and 21 years who have significant
alcohol and other drug related problems. It is funded by the Victorian Government
Department of Human Services and is the first of its kind in Australia.
YSAS is a joint initiative of Jesuit Social Services, Turning Point Alcohol & Drug
Centre, St Vincent's Hospital and the Centre for Adolescent Health.
YSAS will operate outreach teams comprising of 2-3 workers in 7 locations across Victoria.
They are Bendigo, Melbourne CBD, Melbourne Inner West, Melbourne Northern region,
Dandenong/Springvale, Latrobe Valley and Frankston. These teams will be able to work with
young people in their own environment and make a prompt, useful response to their needs.
YSAS will also offer young people a short-term residential care facility with the capacity
for providing drug withdrawal. YSAS will also provide training and support services to
practitioners from a range of sectors who work with young people in the target group (ie
general practitioners, youth workers and drug and alcohol clinicians).
YSAS has a strong commitment to working collaboratively with other service providers.
