ANALGESICS

Analgesics such as paracetamol, low dose aspirin and perhaps codeine are frequently recommended by the doctor for osteoarthritis where there is no inflammation involved. However codeine and paracetamol are not effective in the treatment of arthritis where inflammation is present but provide effective pain relief.

It is important to discuss with the doctor which analgesics are being taken, as taking aspirin with other anti-inflammatories should be avoided except under close medical supervision. Large doses of aspirin are required to reduce inflammation associated with arthritis, but it is vital to adhere to the dosage recommended by the doctor.
