DIVISION ACHIEVES TIER 1 STATUS

The North East Valley Division – YOUR DIVISION has been awarded “Tier 1 status” by the Commonwealth Department of Health & Ageing. We have been given to understand that we are the only Victorian Division and one of 5 across Australia to be awarded this status in the first year of its operation.

The benefit for the Division is in reduced reporting requirements as well as some Kudos. The Tier One status was achieved for the timeliness, completeness and the quality of deliverables, as well as expending our funds against approved budgets.

Well done to all the staff, Board and you our members who helped achieve this feat.

Medicare – slashing red tape and boosting prevention

Prevention will be given a boost, and red tape for doctors will be slashed in a review of Medicare items due to be finalised by March 2009.

Complex red tape that has stood in the way of longer GP consultations will be removed as part of the review.

This will help more Australians gain access to vital prevention advice in areas like diabetes prevention, quitting smoking and avoiding obesity.

The new simplified schedule will come into force on 1 July 2009.

This review is being undertaken alongside development of the National Primary Health Care Strategy, which includes a focus on how to use our health workforce more effectively, and how to better encourage prevention. Full article

Heart Health Online - Opportunity for GPs to participate in research for 40 category 1 QA & CPD points

Deakin, Monash and Swinburne Universities, together with Beyond Blue VcOE are conducting research aiming to evaluate the effectiveness of a computerized health information resource (Heart Health Online) for improving the psychological and physical well-being of people who have experienced a significant adverse coronary event. Heart Health Online provides patient-tailored information resources (e.g. risk factors, diagnosis and symptomatology of CHD, disease progression, treatments and lifestyle management related to CHD) in addition to psycho-education and strategies for managing psychological symptoms (e.g., depression, anxiety and stress) often associated with CHD.

They are currently seeking GPs to participate in this study. The recruitment phase of the study is ongoing for the next 6 months (December 08 – May 09). GPs who participate will be asked to invite eligible patients through a letter of invitation to patients identified through patient records and also through invitation to new patients attending the clinic in the recruitment phase.

Participating GPs who enlist at least two patients to the study will be paid $100 for their time, will have on-going access to Heart Health Online, and will be eligible for 40 Category 1 QA & CPD points. To register interest in the study, or to find out more, please contact Dr. Matthew Fuller-Tyszkiewicz on (03) 9251 7344 or matthewf@deakin.edu.au.

Immunisation

HPV (Gardasil) Program

The community-based HPV catch-up program (delivered through general practice and community immunisation services), is provided for: 12-13* to 18 year old girls who have not completed their course at school; and 18 to 26 year old women.

The program finishes on 30 June 2009, so to be eligible for free vaccine, all females in the above age groups must have started the course with their first dose of the vaccine by 30 June 2009, and complete all 3 doses by 31 December 2009.  Please administer catch-up Gardasil vaccine doses using the correct dose spacing recommended.

*Notes:

1. Eligibility is from the age of the first year of secondary school (Year 7).

2. HPV vaccine will continue to be provided for Year 7 girls only from 2009 onwards as part of the National Immunisation Program schedule in Victoria.

HPV Register

Victorian GPs were sent a letter and invited to register for the HPV register in mid September 2008. GPs, who have administered an HPV vaccine dose to an eligible female 12 to 26 years for Gardasil, are eligible for a payment of $6 (GST exempt) for each dose notified. As of 31/10/08 of the 5694 GPs in Vic 3567 (63%) had registered.

For further information or questions please contact the HPV register on 1800 478 734 www.hpvregister.org.au. The website has a section for health professionals and one for consumers with links to related websites

Changes to the 4 year old overdue rules for Centrelink payments

Currently when a child has not received their 4 year old vaccines the Australian Childhood Immunisation Register (ACIR) does not consider them overdue until they turn 5 years of age. As 1 January 2009 this will change and children turning 4 (born on or after 01/01/2005) will be considered overdue if they have not received their 4 year old vaccines by 4 years and 1 month of age. In these cases, parents of children may receive a letter from Centrelink indicating the ACIR has no record of their child’s 4 year old vaccinations. The letter will advise parents they have a further 63 days to ensure information on their 4 year olds vaccination status is sent into the ACIR to ensure they retain any eligibility for Child Care Benefits. The first impact will be felt in March 2009, when the first affected 4 year olds turn 4 years and 2 months age. Practices are advised to review their patients born in 2005 in order to manage the change.

Information Management

General Computer Tip - Grouping objects in Word

Sometimes you put a picture in a document and maybe add an arrow or some other object. Rather than moving these objects independently it is much better to group them.

1.   Click on the first object – this will place handlebars on the object, meaning it is an “active” object which you can move and/or resize.

2.   Hold down the Shift key and click on the second object. Both objects are now “active” – you can move them both at the same time.

3.   Make sure your Drawing toolbar is displayed – View menu/Toolbars/Drawing.

4.   Click on the down pointing arrowhead next to Draw on the Drawing toolbar and select Group – your 2 objects will now become one object and can be manipulated as one object.

Medical Director Tip - Dosage Administration Aid Prescribing

You are able to prescribe DAA services to Department of Veterans Affairs patients. Simply type DVA  in the Enter Drug name box and this will bring up a list of 3 service items. Further information re this and other DAA services is available from the DVA website.

This weeks IM problem - Turning off Auto-capitalise

Question: When you do free text into the past history list (I know I shouldn't!!), is there a way in MD3 to get rid of the Auto-capitalise permanently, so that I can write abbreviations (another slap on the wrist for me!!!)  e.g. CVA or CIN3 etc without it appearing in small letters. Every time I untick the Autocapitalise and then come back to the same condition, it reverts back to lower case.

Answer: First of all, the lecture!! Both CIN3 and CVA are in the coded lists so why free text? But to answer the question - it appears you have to turn off Auto-capitalise each time – there is no option to change this, as far as I know. However if you open Progress Notes and use the Reason button there is no Auto-capitalise. Generally you only use the Past History/New item for retrospective history items. Any current diagnoses and/or reason for contact should be done from within the Progress Notes.
