A Word from the Editor

It’s time to change!

Practices on Medical Director 2 should start to consider the move to Medical Director 3. Previously we have suggested that there was no pressing urgency to upgrade to MD3. This was because of difficulties in the migration process as well as shortcomings in MD3 (such as the recall system working quite differently).

Most of the issues involved with the migration have now been resolved and there are certain features in MD3 that are not available in MD2. Of particular importance is the ability to inactivate patients not seen in the practice for x number of years with a single button click, rather than the hours of work involved in inactivating patients one by one in MD2. In addition, MD3 also allows patient photos to be added to the record and not too far down the track, the ability to view streamed medical images such as x-rays.

It is obvious that HCN are concentrating on MD3 for new developments and enhancements in the software and that MD2 is falling behind. We suggest that you talk with your IT person about this change. The half dozen or so practices using MD3 in the division are generally satisfied with the changeover.

Practices that use Pracsoft at the front desk will also find that the SQL interface with MD3 as much faster and more efficient.

This weeks IM problem - Wrong BP recorded

Question: I correctly recorded a patient’s BP (using the Blood Pressure tool). I then saw my next patient and recorded his BP, but unfortunately I saved it in the previous patient’s record. It was only the following day that I realized my mistake. How do I fix this?

Answer: There are 3 things you need to do.

1. Delete the incorrect BP recording of Patient 1. Open Patient 1’s record and go into the BP tool. In MD2 click on View (no need for this step in MD3). You will see a chronological list of the BP measurements. Click once on the incorrect measurement and press the Delete key.

2. Fix up Patient 1’s Progress Note. Go into the Progress Notes. Click once on the date where the incorrect BP was recorded, then click on the Append button. Type in that the second recorded BP was incorrect and click on Save. (Remember you can’t change progress notes after midnight of the day they were recorded – you can only “Append”).

3. Re-record the correct BP in Patient 2’s record. Open Patient 2’s record and go into the BP tool. Type in the correct BP and also change the date and time of the recording.

Eligible patients for Janine’s services will be functionally disabled by their severe mental illness and will consent to the nurse’s involvement.
