A Word from the Editor

Final eNews for 2013

This is the final eNews for the year, but we will resume production in the first week of February. On behalf of the Chair, the Board, CEO and staff we wish you all a safe and happy holiday break. We thank you for your support during the year and we will continue to provide support in 2014.

So for a bit of fun to finish up with, click on the link below to see the division staff perform their Christmas Macarena.

Reindeer Macarena

John Scott Meeting House restaurant closing

On December 20, 2013, the restaurant at the John Scott Meeting House of La Trobe University will close. The division has held countless functions at “John Scott” including the last 12 Annual General Meetings and we have worked with Rodney Adams, owner of John Scott since about 1996. We appreciate the excellent service from Rodney and his staff over the years. Rodney and his wife Marie are retiring to Queensland and we wish them well in this new stage of their lives.

La Trobe University will take over the administration of the function rooms but the restaurant will close. At this stage the division is not quite sure where we will hold our CPD events in 2014, but rest assured we will find somewhere convenient and nice.

Vaccine management reminder

Your practice must have a person who has the primary responsibility for cold chain management within the practice and this should be defined in their Position Description.

Your practice must perform an annual audit of the vaccine storage procedures. The latest edition of Strive for 5 has a useful template - Appendix 2: Vaccine Storage Self-Audit.

This week’s MD problem - Including “Route of Administration” in medication lists

Question:  I am sending referrals to the Royal District Nursing Service (RDNS) and there is a requirement that “Route of administration” is included for each medication. Currently my referrals don’t display this and include them by handwriting them in. Is there a way to include “Route of administration” electronically?

Answer: Yes there is. You need to modify the referral template(s) and edit the properties of the medication list so that “Route of administration” is included.

1.      Open LetterWriter and from the File menu select Modify template...

2.      Select the referral template.

3.      Locate the medication list field – <<Clinical Details:Medication List>>

4.      Right click on the <<Clinical Details:Medication List>> and select “Properties

5.       In the Medication Field Properties window click the “Route of Administration” box and Save

The next time you open the referral template “Route of administration” will be included in the medication list.

General Computer Tip - Changing to normal text

Sometimes when you copy and paste from websites, other documents and emails you retain the format of the source documents with all its a mixture of fonts, sizes and colour.  All you want is for it to become plain text.

You can highlight all the text and select the Normal style from the ribbon but there is also a keyboard shortcut. Simply highlight the text and press Shift + Control + N – this changes all the text to “normal”. If it just a paragraph you wish to change you don’t even need to highlight the entire paragraph, simply insert the cursor anywhere in the paragraph and type Shift + Control + N (all together as one keypress).

An old woman was asked, "At your ripe age, what would you prefer to get Parkinsons or Alzheimers?"
The wise one answered, "Definitely Parkinsons - better to spill half my wine than to forget where I put the bottle."
