A Word from the Editor

NO LOCAL GPS ON NMML BOARD

Local GPs unsuccessful in nominating

Last week’s Annual General Meeting of the NMML revealed a Medicare Local where both former full-time General Practitioner members of the Board were replaced with non-medical appointments. I use the word ‘appointments’ deliberately, as no elections were held despite there being 4 Board vacancies (nearly 50% of the Board).

Three highly reputable local GPs were interviewed (one a prior NMML Board member) all with recognized governance skills and/or previous DGP Board experience, but they were NOT successful.

Effectively, there are now no primary health practitioners on the Board, with the exception of the chair, currently “Head of the Academic Centre for General Practice and Primary Health Care” at Melbourne University, who includes a session at a non-NMML General Practice in her busy schedule.

AMA call for GPs to fill in survey on experiences with your ML

The AMA is conducting a very short survey of GPs to inform its response to the governments Medicare Local Review. Following the depth of feeling at our recent AGM, we would encourage you all to “Have your say”.

The survey offers a unique opportunity to detail your experiences with the Northern Melbourne Medicare Local (NMML) over the past 24 months. The questions are relevant and simple with a suitable range of responses. IT WON’T take more than 2 MINUTES OF YOUR TIME TO COMPLETE and will provide a formal avenue for the AMA and government to consider.

Ask all the GPs in your practice to complete this survey individually. The survey is anonymous and can be accessed here.

Information Management

Data Quality and the eHealth Challenge

On the evening of Wednesday November 27, the NEV Division ran a very successful eHealth Information session with 50+ attendees, including representatives from two Victorian Medicare Locals who were able to provide valuable insights into how a Medicare Local is able to provide quality support in the difficult eHealth arena. The evening included presentations from Christine Chidgey from PEN Computer Systems, Judy Evans from the RACGP (Manager - Systems and Innovation) and Noel Stewart (Information Management, NEVDGP). This brings to 4, the number of eHealth Information sessions that the division has run since June 2012, not bad for an organisation that receives no funding to do this.

The evaluation feedback was very positive with an overwhelming appreciation of the support provided by the division in IM and eHealth.

The Data Quality and eHealth Challenge presentation by Noel Stewart is available on the NEVDGP website as well as the Accurate Recording of Clinical Information, a presentation by Noel Stewart at the HCN Information Session, held earlier in Dandenong on the same day.

Medical Director Tip - Improving the recording of “Reason for medication”

To achieve a 100% recording of “Reason for medication” for all medications a team meeting could discuss the pros and cons of recording “Reason for medication” for all medications. This could be achieved by forcing “Reason for medication” to be turned on:
Tools >Options >Prescribing – tick in “Reason for Medication” box
The “Reason for medication” column could be moved from the far right of the medication screen (you have to scroll across to see it) to where it is visible, so that scrolling is not necessary and being visible makes it more relevant – this would assist in retrospectively adding “Reason for medication.”

Humour

Sense of Freshness....

A while ago a fancy new supermarket opened.

It has an automatic water mister to keep the produce fresh.

Just before it goes on, you hear the sound of distant thunder and the smell of fresh rain.

When you pass the milk cases, you hear cows mooing and you experience the scent of fresh mowed hay.

In the meat department there is the aroma of charcoal grilled steaks with onions.

When you approach the egg case, you hear hens cluck and cackle, and the air is filled with the pleasing aroma of bacon and eggs frying.

The bread department features the tantalizing smell of fresh baked bread and cookies.

I don't buy toilet paper there anymore.
